A diplomatic earthquake shook the UN Security Council on Thursday as Israel’s airstrike on Doha drew rare, unified condemnation—including from its staunchest ally, the United States.
🇺🇸 US Ambassador Dorothy Shea called the operation “counterproductive,” asserting it undermines both Israeli and American strategic goals. In a historic shift, Washington refrained from vetoing the joint UNSC statement, marking the first time in recent memory that all 15 members condemned an Israeli military action.
🇫🇷 France’s envoy Jérôme Bonnafont denounced the strike as a breach of international law, urging a return to the two-state solution and recognition of Palestinian sovereignty.
🇬🇧 UK Ambassador Dame Barbara Woodward echoed the outrage, stating the attack “will do nothing to deliver peace or safeguard Israel’s long-term security.”
🇵🇰 Pakistan’s Ambassador Asim Iftikhar exercised his right to reply after Israel’s envoy invoked the Osama Bin Laden raid to justify targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar. Iftikhar slammed the analogy, calling it “reckless and inflammatory.”
🇶🇦 Qatar’s Prime Minister fired back, branding Tel Aviv as being led by “bloodthirsty extremists,” and reminded the Council that the US never targeted Taliban leaders during the Doha peace process—underscoring the hypocrisy in Israel’s justification.
The fallout signals a growing divide between Israel and its Western allies, with Qatar’s role as a mediator in Gaza ceasefire talks now under threat.
