The Islamabad High Court has suspended Major General (Retd.) Hafeez ur Rehman from his role as Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), citing legal irregularities in his appointment.
Justice Babar Sattar issued a detailed 99-page verdict, declaring the appointment unlawful and inconsistent with the statutory requirements of the PTA Act. The court directed the federal government to appoint a senior member as acting chairman until a lawful appointment is made.

- Hafeez ur Rehman was appointed in May 2023 during the tenure of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
- The court found procedural flaws and lack of transparency in the selection process
- The decision is being hailed by legal experts as a step toward institutional accountability
The suspension has sparked debate over political influence in regulatory bodies and the need for merit-based appointments in Pakistan’s public institutions.
